Quick Style Guide: Dealing with a “Not-So-Fall” Fall

I’m tired of the heat. Sick and tired of it.  For the last few weeks, the average temperature has been 100 degrees.  While usually the temps may begin to drop in other states, around here it’s gonna stay hot.   See, we don’t really get a fall.  (Two Thanksgivings ago, it was 75 degrees)  We get hotness that one day finally really drops to cold.  This eliminates any chance to wear cute Fall clothes! *tears*  And I’m ready to wear sweaters, jackets, tights, and boots!  So, how do you accomplish this in such a warm “fall”? Transition carefully!  Let’s break it down in this Quick Style Guide:

Pants:

I’ve lived in skirts/dresses and shorts for the past 2 ½ months.  And I’ve loved it, but I’m ready to pull on some pants now. To make it feel more like the fall that it should be slip on a pair of jeans. Just like jean shorts, you can wear practically anything with your jeans.  Choose a dark wash to accent the wonderful fall shades.   If you’re not quite ready to cover up those ankles, roll your jeans up.  Voila! Pegged jeans! The perfect in between!

Jackets/Cardis:

Oh, how I love fall jackets! Trench coats are nothing I could ever wear around here in the fall only in winter. If you’re in the same boat, look for short sleeve jackets with lots of style.  I.E. Cute cuts, Interesting fabrics, Bold colors, Unique hardware/embellishments, or Distinctive collar.  Play it up! Have fun with it! You’ll be able to pull out that boyfriend blazer soon enough! (I’m dying to wear mine!)  Wear them with skirts and dresses for a different twist. Suggesstion: look for lighter weight fabrics!  NO wool or tweed, too hot! Cardis have pretty much the same rules! Lightweight fabrics, pretty details, perfect!

Shirts:

You wanna wear long sleeves, but think you’ll pass out if you do? On a little bit cooler day, pair a long sleeve(pushed up) or ¾ length sleeve shirt with your shorts. The effect is always cute, and still keeps you cool! Also, chose lightweight fabrics or sheer! Put a cami on under a sheer shirt/blouse for cool fall look!

Shoes:

Boots oh how I love you! How I can’t wait to wear tights with you.  But now, you make my feet/legs hot. Same for you, eh?  For an easier transistion, try booties, or ankle boots! Not quite as tall on your calf, and not nearly as hot!  Or try on a pair of oxfords! You’d be amazed how cute and trendy they really are!

And it just so happens that today, I’m wearing jeans and a short sleeve jacket, since it’s a nice cooler 90 degrees.  Compared to the 120 degrees on black concrete, today’s temperature feels like the beginning of fall!

What are your summer-to-fall transition pieces?

Quick Style Guide: Staying Beautiful in the Heat

Oh, its been to long since the last quick style guide! And you know how I love them so!  It’s summer ya’ll! And in Texas that means 85 degrees by 9:00am.  It’s hot, its sticky, its hard to stay beautiful!  So of course I’ve got some fabulous things to offer to help stay looking hot all day long!

surfspraysHair: Its difficult to have cute hair in the summer.

My first reaction to overheating is to pull my hair up into a ponytail and off my neck.  Pony tails don’t have to be boring though!  Position is everything.  Play with it! Try high on your head, try a straightened pony in the middle, or a low natural wave pony behind your ear (this is what I’m sporting today, I let my hair airdry overnight)

But there are some days I love to wear my hair down, you say?  Me too! So go for an easy style!  Easy, Beach Waves! Instead of slaving over a curling iron during the morning, try some wave spray!  My absolute favorite is Garnier Fructise Wonder Waves Spray! It helped create this look and this one. But I’m also ready to try some new products, inspired by this Style.com article—Surf Sprays!  I’m going on the hunt for the Frédéric Fekkai Beach Waves later!  Welcome to your new summer hair!

Makeup: Who wants cakey foundation and creasing eye make up?! No one!

somekindofgorgeous

So when possible go without!  Put on the minimum you can stand….for me I need eyeliner/mascara/lip balm!  If you know you’re going to be near water or outside all day, chose something waterproof.  My Faves: Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Sable and Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express Waterproof Mascara

Switch foundation/base whatever you wanna call it! Try something lighter.  Since my wedding I’ve been using Benefit Some Kind of Gorgeous (Foundation Faker).  Its a lot lighter than other foundation and perfect for summer. Definitely give it a try!  Have someone at Ulta help you!

Body:  It seems no matter what the season my skin is dry dry dry.  Summer is awful be cause lotion and high temps don’t mix well.lovemycouturesamples

So try a light lotion, like some of Nivea’s options!  I use something that protects my tan. I apply it after I shower at night, Love My Couture Tan Extender.  It actually works and is not greasy when I’m outside.

So there ya go! A few ways to stay beautiful (easily) in the summer heat!

Quick Style Guide: Mens Casual stepped up!

A few days a go I had a twitter follower ask for a few tips on how to dress up a casual wardrobe. Pretty easy right? Well this follower happens to be male!  Men’s fashion is an area that I usually don’t do, but let’s try it out.

Just to be clear, I judge Men’s fashion on if my boyfriend would wear it or not.   I love some of the runway looks, admire them, and then think “he would never wear that”  So these tips come as if my boyfriend asked me.

Quick Tips for dressing up a Causal Wardrobe

watchThrow on a big metal watch!

Never underestimate the power of a watch.  The bigger the better.  I have a friend who is a t-shirt, jeans, boots wearing guy (its Texas, they all wear boots).  But when he puts on a gold watch, I always find myself commenting on hdark jeansow good it looks.   It instantly adds a sleek “man-with-things-to-do, must- have-watch-to keep-track” vibe.

 Try a darker wash jean!

Darker denim is just sleeker.  That’s just the fact.  Women can get away with dressing up darker jeans for a more put together look.  It works the same way for men.  A darker wash of denim will seem more formal.shoes

Try a different pair of shoes!

Always wear tennis shoes with your button down shirts? That instantly makes an “outfit” more casual. Trade for a nice pair of loafers or slip on shoes.  Another way to instantly add a touch of dress, wear the same color shoes and belt.  Makes you looks incredibly well put together, thus dressier.

 shirt

 Go graphic, but not logo!

Take your t-shirt to a new level.  Try a graphic print.  AVOID logo tees, phrases tees, and certain brands.  (These are the brands I recommend avoiding and why….you however are allowed to make your own decisions. —Ed Hardy, Christian Audiger, Affliction, Tapout)  These brands sometimes make the wearer look like a wannabe UFC fighter or just a plain d-bag.

There ya go! How to dress up a causal wardrobe-Men’s edition! Maybe I’ll try Men tips more often…..

Got any more tips? Let me know I’ll add them!

Christmas Wardrobe-quick and easy!

Is anyone else stumped what to wear on Christmas?  I am! Going to multiple families, cooking, eating, standing, sitting, opening presents=  the need for a breathable, comfy outfit. Here’s the breakdown:

Wants:

  • Look festive (without wearing anything tacky)
  • Look cute (duh!)
  • Look put together (not like I just woke up and/or sloppy)
  • Be Comfortable (playing with little kids, I need to be able to be on the floor)

 Needs:

  • To be warm (for possible outside activities)
  • Comfy (no stiff fabrics allowed)
  • Not tight fitting (allows room for stomach to expand)
  • Covers all essential parts (no butt/boob cleavage in front of relatives)
  • Appropriate dress code (no under/over dressing, makes for awkwardness)

I’m not going to buy anything new, since I need to buy a few last minute gifts, plus it is more fun to buy for others anyway.

So let’s do a little shopping of our closets this week.

My favorite inventory includes comfy sweaters, and cardigans, which are perfect for Christmas visiting.  The needs are all easy and pretty much no brainers, though dress code can be kind of tricky.  Visit here or here for a great break down of dress codes for MEN and WOMEN!

 Let’s  tackle these wants:

#1        Look festive-This can be done with out being tacky. (Avoid appliquéd or cartoonish sweaters with any kind of Christmas “theme”). Stick to jewel tones colors (including red and green), embellished tops/or sweaters (examples below), and patterned jackets/blouses.

69972964-0870954009-0863452014-0866957073-08

#2        Look cute- this can be accomplished by anything you wear.  Just add a smile!

#3        Look put together- easy peasy! At least, brush your hair, brush your teeth, and wash your face. If you don’t want to put on full makeup: swipe on a little mascara or lip-gloss. This will prevent looking like you just rolled out of bed.

#4        Be comfortable- Traveling, eating, playing with kids all requires comfy clothes. Stick with stretchy fabrics that are not extremely fitted.  Tunic/Dress, Leggings, and flat boots stand out most in my closet for this type of comfort.  Also, stretchy jeans, supportive flats, and warm/ adaptable cardigans and jackets work well with comfort..

And of course accessorize to your own liking! Send me pics of your best Christmas outfit to Michelle at fierce_glamour@yahoo.com

How to find the perfect winter coat

With the holiday season here, and temperatures dropping lower every day, now’s the time to pull out your winter coat and/or buy new one.  I bought a new one last year, and it took a bit of trial and error to find the right one.  Now if it’s your turn to buy a new one, let my lessons be your guide!

How to find the perfect winter coat:

Tweed Weaved Jacket1)      What is the main purpose of you coat?

Stupid question right? Wrong.  You wouldn’t wear a puffy ski jacket to a cocktail party and you wouldn’t wear a floor length wool dress coat to an outdoor sporting event.  Coats have certain occasions.  One of my wants was a coat I could wear to work and over jeans and heels.  I wanted something a little bit dressier than my hooded bomber jacket.

 2)      Location, Location, Location

Sure that puffy red Land’s End jacket with the faux fur trim is adorable, and it will sure keep you warm in -32degrees.  Do you really need that when you liveLONGSLEEVE TRENCH COAT IN HOODIE in Florida?   Where you live and the average winter temperature need to play a big factor in what warmth your new coat provides.  If the temperature fluctuates often during a day, you might want to consider a medium weight coat made of a lighter fabric or even one with a removable lining.

 3)      Price is always a factor

Know before you shop, whether online or in-store, how much you are going to spend.  It’s pretty easy to find a coat priced between $100 and $200, but if you’ve got a smaller range like $20 to $40, it can still be done.  Web shopping might be your best bet.  Sites like Forever 21,Papaya, and Lulus offer some great options with a smaller price tag.  I found my coat for $20 at Forever 21.

4)      Length and Color, No, not of your hair.

Floor, Knee, Mid-Thigh, or Waist.  What is the perfect length for you? If you don’t know which you would prefer, go try on a whole bunch of different coats in different lengths. You’re never obligated to buy.  Try on and once you find what you like, look online for a better deal.  Color lights up your life, but maybe not your coat.  Determine if you want a bright color like purple, pink, red or yellow, or if you want a more neutral shade, white, cream, black, brown, grey or navy.  If you like white or cream, think about the upkeep of it. You will have to be more careful where you lay your coat.  Also, think about pattern, hounds-tooth or plaid are always cute options.

 holly golightly trench in white

5)      The difference is in the details

Think about what details you want on your coat-pockets, a belt, lots of buttons, a zipper, a hood?  The pocket and hood are especially important, as they are sometimes as much necessities as they are accessories.  I once got home with a jacket without pockets, and it bugged me so much I had to get rid it.

Good luck on your coat buying adventure!

Quick Style Guide: Thanksgiving Attire..leave room for the turkey!

Thanksgiving is upon us! Family, Friends, Food, Clothes?  What does one wear for a meal with family, or more than one meal with different families? Here’s your quick style guide for Thanksgiving dressing! (haha, so punny!)

Remember a few key things:

A) You’re going to be eating alot!  Keep clothes a little looser fitting. You’ll get super uncomfortable when that stomach expands from food consumption. No skin tight garments!

B) You might be seeing family you haven’t seen since last year, or since forever ago. Don’t send grandma into cardiac arrest with all that bare skin.  Wear a cami under that lowcut sweater or tights/leggings under that cute new mini!  Cover your parts, the only naked thing people wanna see is a turkey.

C) You might be standing more than you think!  Whether mom invited more guests than she thought or 90 yr old Aunt Ruby needs the chair, or you’ve been commanded to help out in the kitchen, comfortable shoes will be your friend.  The spiky stilettos  or thigh-high boots just won’t work for this occasion.  And no one wants to have to see you take of your shoes. Cute flats or flat boots are where its at!

A few options

1)     Oversize sweater belted low with leggings and flats

 2)     Dark wash denim jeans with embellished blouse or sweater

3)     Jersey dress with dark tights and flat boots

All of that being said, I still have no clue what I’m gonna wear! But you better believe it will be comfy and cute!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Hope its a blessed one!

Winter Weddings…what do you wear?!

So we’ve talked about winter weddings/bridesmaids dresses, but what about when you are a guest to a winter wedding. What do you wear? Heck I have trouble picking out what to wear to any wedding. This question has come up quite a few times lately, by me and a reader. So, Lets figure it out!

First off, think of dressing this way. If the bride weren’t getting married, but just attending the wedding what would she wear? (Applicable if you know her only) Might help you get an idea of the appropriateness. Now, let’s break it down

 Semi-Casual Wedding
I was faced with this problem last weekend. My friends had one of the most unique/memorable weddings I’ll ever attend (She wore a black dress, he wore jeans, it was so them!) Anyway it was a semi-casual day and I had a super super hard time deciding what to wear. I didn’t want to be too dressy or too casual. And decided that I just couldn’t wear flats to a wedding, it’s against my nature. So I ended up with black leggings, a grey/white pinstriped shirtdress slightly pulled over a red belt around my hips and black patent pumps. The leggings made it a little more casual but the shirt dress made it appropriate. If you attend a semi-casual wedding, keep it pretty simple but in your comfort zone.

Options:

  • A nice sweater with slacks
  • A shirt dress with flats
  • A loose fitting tee with a fitted skirt
  • A long tunic with leggings or patterned tights

semi casual weddingsemi casual wedding 2

Day/Inside Wedding

All weddings are hard to dress for. Unless you’re in the wedding party, cause you’re pretty much set. Day/Inside weddings are no exception. I usually consider these among the “something you wear to church” appropriateness. To amp it up just a notch and be totally on trend, pair this outfit with black tights, or a boyfriend blazer. Also belt it. Add one over your cardigan, dress, jacket, or skirt. HOMERUN! (Michelle Obama does this fabulously!) You’ll look fashionable without being inappropriately dressed.

Options:

  • A dress with a pretty cardigan
  • A pencil skirt with a flowy/ruffly top (one fitted/one voluminous piece work well)
  • A print skirt and nice fitted blazer
  • A broached cardigan/blouse with sharp black pants

day inside 1day inside 2

Day/Outside Wedding
No one should be having and outside wedding in winter. It’s cold! But if you do attend one, wear a cute warm jacket with some great lines. Try some of these options for a dressier approach:

outside 1outside 2

Evening/Cocktail Wedding

Here’s where you can have a little fun! Wear sparkly, statement jewelry! Wear fun shoes! Just make sure you look conservative and put together. You shouldn’t look like you’re headed out for the nearest club. Cover all your parts! Especially in winter, jewel tones and metallic are lovely! Avoid too much black. Though we all know the right LBD can be amazing!

Options:

cocktail 1cocktail 2

Here’s a quick review: To be super trendy add black tights, a belt and/or a boyfriend blazer. Hello chic! Jewelry and shoes are your friends. Wear a simple outfit and dress it up or down by changing your shoes and jewelry. Its not your day, it’s the Bride’s. Never wear too much black or too much white/cream. You don’t want to upstage the bride!! Simple is better sometimes!

And if all else fails, wear your little black dress accessorizing and finishing accordingly to the wedding type.

Good luck dressing for your next wedding!

Belt Buckle Bulge: SOLUTION!

The waist of most of my pants (especially my jeans) stretches out pretty fast. Thus they require a belt. But I like to wear fitted tops that are longer than my pants waist.
This leads to a dilemma.

1) Wear a belt, pull the top over the belt, and have a funny pooch in the front over the belt buckle.
2) Forget the belt and just tug at my pants all day. And complain that I should have worn a belt and looked stupid with the pooch.

There is no win-win here. Either way, I end up pretty frustrated. Well after a #2 solution this past weekend, I’m fed up.

So after a little bit of internet searching, I think I found a solution. A couple brilliant people somewhere in time decided to make a “virtually invisible belt”. I found two such products, the isABelt and Invisibelt

The Invisibelt promises that it “provides instant slimming effect, lays flat under fitted tops, and adjusts like a bra.”

It comes in naked, black, patterns, and a few limited edition colors. Sizing: original fits sizes 0-14; plus fits up to size 4x Price: $19.95”

The isABelt promises that “Belt is ideal when you need a belt, but a traditional one just won’t work with your outfit. Helps eliminate back-gap, belt-bulk and belt slippage Great for fashion issues stemming from low-riser styles.”

It comes in clear or black. “ Sizing: All sizes adjust down to accommodate smaller sizes , Small, medium and large size adjusts down to fit a size “0″ ,Plus adjusts down to fit a size “4″, Price: $16.95

Well, I definitely want one. I’m leaning toward the Invisibelt, but maybe cause I like the packaging and thickness of the belt better. Either way, this seems like a great solution to my problem.

Have you tried either of these products? Do you have this belt bulge problem? What was your solution? <
