Quick Style Guide: Dealing with a “Not-So-Fall” Fall

I’m tired of the heat. Sick and tired of it.  For the last few weeks, the average temperature has been 100 degrees.  While usually the temps may begin to drop in other states, around here it’s gonna stay hot.   See, we don’t really get a fall.  (Two Thanksgivings ago, it was 75 degrees)  We get hotness that one day finally really drops to cold.  This eliminates any chance to wear cute Fall clothes! *tears*  And I’m ready to wear sweaters, jackets, tights, and boots!  So, how do you accomplish this in such a warm “fall”? Transition carefully!  Let’s break it down in this Quick Style Guide:

Pants:

I’ve lived in skirts/dresses and shorts for the past 2 ½ months.  And I’ve loved it, but I’m ready to pull on some pants now. To make it feel more like the fall that it should be slip on a pair of jeans. Just like jean shorts, you can wear practically anything with your jeans.  Choose a dark wash to accent the wonderful fall shades.   If you’re not quite ready to cover up those ankles, roll your jeans up.  Voila! Pegged jeans! The perfect in between!

Jackets/Cardis:

Oh, how I love fall jackets! Trench coats are nothing I could ever wear around here in the fall only in winter. If you’re in the same boat, look for short sleeve jackets with lots of style.  I.E. Cute cuts, Interesting fabrics, Bold colors, Unique hardware/embellishments, or Distinctive collar.  Play it up! Have fun with it! You’ll be able to pull out that boyfriend blazer soon enough! (I’m dying to wear mine!)  Wear them with skirts and dresses for a different twist. Suggesstion: look for lighter weight fabrics!  NO wool or tweed, too hot! Cardis have pretty much the same rules! Lightweight fabrics, pretty details, perfect!

Shirts:

You wanna wear long sleeves, but think you’ll pass out if you do? On a little bit cooler day, pair a long sleeve(pushed up) or ¾ length sleeve shirt with your shorts. The effect is always cute, and still keeps you cool! Also, chose lightweight fabrics or sheer! Put a cami on under a sheer shirt/blouse for cool fall look!

Shoes:

Boots oh how I love you! How I can’t wait to wear tights with you.  But now, you make my feet/legs hot. Same for you, eh?  For an easier transistion, try booties, or ankle boots! Not quite as tall on your calf, and not nearly as hot!  Or try on a pair of oxfords! You’d be amazed how cute and trendy they really are!

And it just so happens that today, I’m wearing jeans and a short sleeve jacket, since it’s a nice cooler 90 degrees.  Compared to the 120 degrees on black concrete, today’s temperature feels like the beginning of fall!

What are your summer-to-fall transition pieces?

How to find the perfect winter coat

With the holiday season here, and temperatures dropping lower every day, now’s the time to pull out your winter coat and/or buy new one.  I bought a new one last year, and it took a bit of trial and error to find the right one.  Now if it’s your turn to buy a new one, let my lessons be your guide!

How to find the perfect winter coat:

Tweed Weaved Jacket1)      What is the main purpose of you coat?

Stupid question right? Wrong.  You wouldn’t wear a puffy ski jacket to a cocktail party and you wouldn’t wear a floor length wool dress coat to an outdoor sporting event.  Coats have certain occasions.  One of my wants was a coat I could wear to work and over jeans and heels.  I wanted something a little bit dressier than my hooded bomber jacket.

 2)      Location, Location, Location

Sure that puffy red Land’s End jacket with the faux fur trim is adorable, and it will sure keep you warm in -32degrees.  Do you really need that when you liveLONGSLEEVE TRENCH COAT IN HOODIE in Florida?   Where you live and the average winter temperature need to play a big factor in what warmth your new coat provides.  If the temperature fluctuates often during a day, you might want to consider a medium weight coat made of a lighter fabric or even one with a removable lining.

 3)      Price is always a factor

Know before you shop, whether online or in-store, how much you are going to spend.  It’s pretty easy to find a coat priced between $100 and $200, but if you’ve got a smaller range like $20 to $40, it can still be done.  Web shopping might be your best bet.  Sites like Forever 21,Papaya, and Lulus offer some great options with a smaller price tag.  I found my coat for $20 at Forever 21.

4)      Length and Color, No, not of your hair.

Floor, Knee, Mid-Thigh, or Waist.  What is the perfect length for you? If you don’t know which you would prefer, go try on a whole bunch of different coats in different lengths. You’re never obligated to buy.  Try on and once you find what you like, look online for a better deal.  Color lights up your life, but maybe not your coat.  Determine if you want a bright color like purple, pink, red or yellow, or if you want a more neutral shade, white, cream, black, brown, grey or navy.  If you like white or cream, think about the upkeep of it. You will have to be more careful where you lay your coat.  Also, think about pattern, hounds-tooth or plaid are always cute options.

5)      The difference is in the details

Think about what details you want on your coat-pockets, a belt, lots of buttons, a zipper, a hood?  The pocket and hood are especially important, as they are sometimes as much necessities as they are accessories.  I once got home with a jacket without pockets, and it bugged me so much I had to get rid it.

Good luck on your coat buying adventure!

Quick Style Guide: Thanksgiving Attire..leave room for the turkey!

Thanksgiving is upon us! Family, Friends, Food, Clothes?  What does one wear for a meal with family, or more than one meal with different families? Here’s your quick style guide for Thanksgiving dressing! (haha, so punny!)

Remember a few key things:

A) You’re going to be eating alot!  Keep clothes a little looser fitting. You’ll get super uncomfortable when that stomach expands from food consumption. No skin tight garments!

B) You might be seeing family you haven’t seen since last year, or since forever ago. Don’t send grandma into cardiac arrest with all that bare skin.  Wear a cami under that lowcut sweater or tights/leggings under that cute new mini!  Cover your parts, the only naked thing people wanna see is a turkey.

C) You might be standing more than you think!  Whether mom invited more guests than she thought or 90 yr old Aunt Ruby needs the chair, or you’ve been commanded to help out in the kitchen, comfortable shoes will be your friend.  The spiky stilettos  or thigh-high boots just won’t work for this occasion.  And no one wants to have to see you take of your shoes. Cute flats or flat boots are where its at!

A few options

1)     Oversize sweater belted low with leggings and flats

 2)     Dark wash denim jeans with embellished blouse or sweater

3)     Jersey dress with dark tights and flat boots

All of that being said, I still have no clue what I’m gonna wear! But you better believe it will be comfy and cute!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Hope its a blessed one!

Obsession of the day: Leggings

I could wear these every day for the rest of my life (or at least until I get tired of them). I mean work, play, and sleep in them. Mine are unbelievably comfortable. Today, it is basically flooding outside so rain boots are a must. And leggings are the perfect “pant?” to wear with them. They slide right in with out any stuffing and dry out quickly when a few rain drops hit them! Woo-hoo!

Wear them with a longer tunic, belted dress (how I’m wearing mine today), a long cardigan, or a boyfriend blazer. Just about anyway imaginable, these can work. I especially love how they look with boots of almost any kind!

I like mine just plain stretchy black but you can get them in all kinds: jeggings, patterned, shredded, studded, liquid, and more! They can be super expensive or super cheap. Mine were $4.90 from Forever21. (I’m a cheapie sometimes.)

However you wear yours, you can’t deny this trend. What’s your current fashion obsession?
