Shine Beauty Guru: Best Beauty Product for Summer!

This month’s Shine Beauty Guru assignment is:

What is your best summer beauty secret?   Name one!

WHAT!?!? No way! Not possible! Too many choices! Well, maybe if I try!

hmm, ok I think I’ve got one!

My biggest beauty problem in the summer is my hair! I have little desire to dry and fix it.  READ: use any kind of heated tool!  While air-dryed hair sometimes dries nicely, mostly it just goes crazy!

ENTER: Frederic Fekkai Limited Edition Marine Summer Hair + Aquanutrients Beach Waves2206645

Beach Waves for short!

It’s the key for easy summer hairstyles, whether you pull it in a pony, half back, twist it, braid it, or leave it down!

My favorite way to use it: I let my hair dry overnight then in the morning I’m ready to start styling.  I flip my head over spritzing a few sprays of shine spray all over.   I flip my head back up and section into 4 layers (bottom, middle, top right of part, top left of part).  On each layer I spritz on a few sprays of BEACH WAVES then finger scrunch all over layer.  After I’ve completely finished I scrunch a few more times.

Voila—5 minute hair!   celebrity-beach-wavesIf I’m in a rush, I’ll usually stop here but if not, I can take a little more time and make softer waves with a curling iron or a wave iron. This makes a dressy ’do a lot easier. (Like Kate Hudson and Jessica Beil!) It’s such a beautiful style that looks completely effortless and almost is!

One of the best things, it does exactly what it says: “Marine waters create surf-sexy texture, and sea kelp hydrates and blocks moisture loss for sexy, tousled waves, anytime and anywhere. UV shield helps prevent fading.” [Frederic Fekkai]

Beach waves can also be used before/after the pool.  Helps make a cute hairstyle after getting wet in the pool! And the UV protection makes NO DYE JULY just a little bit easier.

While it’s not the cheapest at $23.00, I’ll probably get 2 summers out of it which makes it worth it! I don’t think I could survive my horrible hair days without this little summer beauty secret.

What’s your Summer Beauty Secret?

Month Long Mission: No Dye July

Last year, I did a month long feature called No Buy July! Do you remember?  I attempted to not buy anything fashion and beauty related for an entire month.  I fell off the wagon once or twice but it wasn’t a total waste of a mission.

Well this year, even though its 7 days into the month, I’ve decided to start a new month long project!

Welcome to

NO DYE JULY

Ask yourself, how long has it been since you dyed/highlighted your hair?  Mine happened to be about 2 weeks ago (before my wedding reception).

Ask yourself another question, what is your natural hair color?  I think mine is a dark blonde/light brown color?  From when my roots grow, its pretty icky, but I wonder what it looks like all grown out.

If you’re like me, you’ve gotten caught up in the world of chemically altering your hair, whether through chemical straightening, dyeing or highlighting.  Every few months, I have to do something with my hair to cover up my roots and it’s a never ending cycle.

no dye july I feel like I’ve gotten sucked in and can’t get out.  Well now I want to stop!! I watched a bestie of mine grow out her highlight/dye and end up with gorgeous healthy hair that was shiny and full.  I want this!! I’ve attempted this before, but it didn’t last.  Now, I’m determined to make it work! But, I’m going to need your help!  You can join me in my challenge, or even just encourage!

 No Dye July rules:

1)     Do not put any kind of chemical treatment on your hair that alters its color. (Dye, highlight, bleach, etc.)

2)     Encourage others to resist the temptation of dye!

3)     Use color safe shampoos to keep the current color and enhance the natural color!

4)     Find out your natural hair color!!

My own personal goal is to grow out my color. For July I don’t plan to take dye to my hair, but after it grows out so long there will be a definite line of where the dye and natural hair are. Right now my hair is a sandy blonde color but considerably shades lighter than my natural color.   Thus, my plan is to dye from the noticeable line down in a shade that is as close to my natural color as possible.  We’ll talk about this more in-depth later.

So what do you say?  Are you in for No Dye July?  You’ve already made it a week!

If you want to be included in this challenge, email me at fierce_glamour@yahoo.com with your name.  I will be making a list of all who join!  Hopefully we can keep each other on track!

Quick Style Guide: Staying Beautiful in the Heat

Oh, its been to long since the last quick style guide! And you know how I love them so!  It’s summer ya’ll! And in Texas that means 85 degrees by 9:00am.  It’s hot, its sticky, its hard to stay beautiful!  So of course I’ve got some fabulous things to offer to help stay looking hot all day long!

surfspraysHair: Its difficult to have cute hair in the summer.

My first reaction to overheating is to pull my hair up into a ponytail and off my neck.  Pony tails don’t have to be boring though!  Position is everything.  Play with it! Try high on your head, try a straightened pony in the middle, or a low natural wave pony behind your ear (this is what I’m sporting today, I let my hair airdry overnight)

But there are some days I love to wear my hair down, you say?  Me too! So go for an easy style!  Easy, Beach Waves! Instead of slaving over a curling iron during the morning, try some wave spray!  My absolute favorite is Garnier Fructise Wonder Waves Spray! It helped create this look and this one. But I’m also ready to try some new products, inspired by this Style.com article—Surf Sprays!  I’m going on the hunt for the Frédéric Fekkai Beach Waves later!  Welcome to your new summer hair!

Makeup: Who wants cakey foundation and creasing eye make up?! No one!

somekindofgorgeous

So when possible go without!  Put on the minimum you can stand….for me I need eyeliner/mascara/lip balm!  If you know you’re going to be near water or outside all day, chose something waterproof.  My Faves: Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Sable and Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express Waterproof Mascara

Switch foundation/base whatever you wanna call it! Try something lighter.  Since my wedding I’ve been using Benefit Some Kind of Gorgeous (Foundation Faker).  Its a lot lighter than other foundation and perfect for summer. Definitely give it a try!  Have someone at Ulta help you!

Body:  It seems no matter what the season my skin is dry dry dry.  Summer is awful be cause lotion and high temps don’t mix well.lovemycouturesamples

So try a light lotion, like some of Nivea’s options!  I use something that protects my tan. I apply it after I shower at night, Love My Couture Tan Extender.  It actually works and is not greasy when I’m outside.

So there ya go! A few ways to stay beautiful (easily) in the summer heat!

Wedding Breakdown: Hair & Makeup

Lovelies, as you know I got married in April.  I finally am back to a regular routine and can blog out the wedding! (plus we got the pictures back so I can show too!)  Our wedding was outside on a Saturday in the afternoon.  It was a small intimate wedding with family, close friends, and bridal party.  I didn’t want a huge fuss with my or my bridesmaid’s hair and makeup. So we all did it ourselves! As the day started creeping up, I wondered if this was the best way to go, but I didn’t want to have to add extra cost to everyone at the last minute.

 BRIDESMAID HAIR & MAKEUP

I only wanted a few things for my bridesmaids:

  • Amped up day makeup (a little smokier than usual!)
  • A small amount of pink lipstick (everyone ended up using the same one)
  • Same color of nail polish on fingers/toes! (I gave the color to them as part of their gifts)
  • Soft curly hair, mostly down! No Up Do’s! (We all pitched in and curled/fixed each others hair!)

They all used their own makeup.  Their hair was curled with a 1” barrel curling iron and pinned up depending on bangs, layers etc.  We all had on Ulta Nail Polish in Sweetheart Pink.

 BRIDAL MAKEUP AND HAIR:

About two weeks before the wedding, I went to Ulta and got a mini makeover. I told the make up artist what I wanted and she foofed me up, and taught me how to use the products I needed I got new base, eye shadow, and lipstick! I also picked up my water-proof mascara in case!!  I went home and played! I did about 3 practice runs with hair & makeup. (THIS IS A MUST if you’re doing it yourself!! Do NOT wait till your wedding day to experiment!!)

 Makeup:

Benefit Some-Kind-of-Gorgeous (Foundation Faker)

Bare Minerals All-Over Warmth (Bronzer)

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blends (Blush)

Bare Minerals Mineral Veil (Powder)

Too-Faced Natural Eye Kit (Eye Shadow)

Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer in Sable (eyeliner)

Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express Waterproof (Mascara)

Urban Decay Deep Pink Lip Stain

Hair:

Lots of my wedding was DIY, including my hair accessories.    I found the flower bobby pins at Forever 21 and the rhinestone leaves at Hobby Lobby. Then I intertwined them.  The night before, I sprayed my just-washed hair with Garnier Fructis Wonder Waves Spray and let it dry overnight.  Wedding day, I applied more Wonder waves spray to encourage more curl, then curled my whole head with a 1” curling iron.  I pulled my bangs back in to a mini pouf.   I pulled all the hair to one side of my neck and pinned it in strategic spots to look like a low side pony.  Then I pinned in the flowers and sprayed with hair spray.

My hair and makeup stayed all day, and my lipstick never smudged (another reason stains are becoming a favorite!)

Soon, we’ll breakdown the dresses and jewelry! Whoo-hoo! All images are from Treasured Moments Portraits (Pittsburg, TX)

Hair Rut, solved!

Garnier Fructis Wonder Waves Wave Enhancing SprayThis week I’ve felt like I have been in a hair RUT! The cold air already sucks the moisture out of my hair enough without blowdrying or straightening, so I’ve been trying to layoff the heating tools.  Well this has resulted in air -dried, wavy in spots, thrown back with a headband or ponytail hot mess of a hairdo.  And I must say, if you have bad hair, it can kind of dictate your mood, and your self confidence level.  Hence, mine has been low.

While watching “Tough Love” on VH1 last night, right before I went to bed, I saw contestant Liz rocking a cute wavy style that made me think “MUST TRY” before showering.  I did it!

After I showered, I used my normal Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner spray all over,  and Redken Body Full Volume Amplifier spray to my roots.

Bed Head Dual Barrel Waver This time I also added about 15 sprays all over of Garnier Fructis Wonder Waves Wave Enhancing Spray.  This stuff is amazing! It is slowly making me love my wavy hair!  I stumbled upon it one day in Walmart. (If you have wavy or curly hair, this product is a must have!)  I pick combed through my hair then, scruched it with my fingers to make sure to get all the wave back.  After letting it air dry through the night, I checked the mirror this morn to see how frizzy headed I was.

Nada!  I had full mostly wavy hair!  (the wave spray does not leave your hair sticky, grimmy, oily or most of all crunchy! it is still soft and touchable) So I grabbed my trusty Bed Head Dual Barrel Waver (On Sale now at Ulta.com) and touched up a few spots that were too straight for my liking.  Now I know this thing looks like a monster.  When I first got it, I was clueless on how to use it.  Its easy though.  Grab a 1″ section of hair, insert it into the waver like a normal curling iron and clamp close.   Hold for about 15 to 30 seconds then move to lower part of section.  (need more instruction, check out this video! her waver is way bigger than mine though)   I then added more Garnier Fructis Wonder Waves Wave Enhancing Spray, pinned my bangs back into a mini-pouf, and finished with hair spray!

 Easy Beachy Waves

Voila!  A beachy wave hair style that took about 5 mins.  BTW, this is a horrible picture! But the bonus: I recieved about 10 compliments on it today!

Here’s another great style from StyleCaster!  P.S. I’ve alway wondered what they meant by “not clamping the hair in the curling iron” Thank goodness someone finally explained it!  The original article is here: http://www.stylecaster.com/news/6786/how-to-curl-hair-into-long-lasting-romantic-waves

Keep your curls bouncy and beautiful all day long

1

The quickest way for the cosmic forces to ruin your day is to flatten your curled hair. You’ve all had that day when you leave the house feeling super gorgeous, having curled your hair perfectly–only to have it flattened by the time you saunter in to work.

More hair tips here: How to maintain volume in your curls all day

However, there is hope for keeping that bounce in your curls–and your step! Stacy Ho of Cutler Salon explains that the reason a lot of women have problems with hair flattening throughout the day is because women begin finger combing and brushing the hair before the curl cools. “If you don’t wait for the hair to cool before tousling your curls, you are fundamentally just brushing out your set,” says Ho.

Check out Stacy’s demonstration below on how to curl your hair properly for a natural set that will last all day!

Step 1:2 Start with dirty hair. If you don’t have dirty hair, spray Redken Fabricate lightly from roots to ends section by section; it’s a spray texturizer that’s heat activated, so it will give the hair some grittiness to help achieve a more secure curl. Part the hair down the middle and section the hair into two.

Step 2: 3 As you curl your hair, you’re going to work from the bottom up. Instead of moving horizontally up the head, however, you’re going to work in diagonal sections. Your sections should follow the curve of your head for a more natural look with movement.

Step 3:4 Take a one-inch vertical section from the bottom horizontal row of hair. Regardless of the size of the curling iron barrel, the larger the section of hair you take, the bigger the curl will be, whereas tighter curls can be achieved with a smaller section of hair.

Step 4:5 Keep the barrel open while spiraling the section of hair around the barrel; work from roots to ends. It’s very important to get the root into the curl otherwise your hair will look flat at the roots with only the curl at the ends. Close the clamp with the hair inside the barrel.

Step 5: 6Leave an inch or two of the ends of the hair out of the barrel. This will give your hair that loose and romantic (non-prom-y) feel and as an added bonus, keep you from burning your fingers! Open the clamp and let the curled hair slide onto your hand and hold the curl towards the root of the hair. Give the hair a few seconds to cool in your hand.

Step 6: 8For the most flattering look, spiral the curling iron away from the face instead of curling towards the face, which will help to open up your facial features.

Step 7:9 If you have bangs, you can blow dry your bangs with a rounded brush by pulling up and away from the forehead.

Step 8:10

11Now that the hair has cooled, finish the look by lightly spritzing the hair with hairspray as you fingercomb the curls; we recommend Redken Workforce 09 and a light shine spray such as Redken Satin Wear.

Shine Beauty Guru Review: Redken Body Full

As a Shine Beauty Guru, I get sent products to review. For November, we were sent Redken Hair Care Products.  Here is my review:

1This time I decided to jump in with both feet, well more like whole head. I abandoned almost all of my other hair products (still had to apply my split end treatment) to use all of the Redken samples I received. The 4 tested are from the Redken Body Full line which is supposed to “provide normal/fine hair with bodifying strength and density plus style retention. Hair is full of volume, long-lasting style and shine. [ Redken ]”

They included Body Full Shampoo , Body Full Light Conditioner , Body Full Volume Amplifier , Body Full Instant Bodifer .

I have normal to fine hair that tends to be dry, so I figured this line could be great for volume! As I read the back of each bottle though, I was discouraged to see that no product said anything about color-safe. Since I just got highlights put back in my hair I wasn’t thrilled with no protection for color treated hair.

 2

Shampoo/Conditioner Review:

The Body Full Shampoo did as it promised and removed all product build up. It not only felt clean but smelled clean too. I like the cotton-ey sent. The Body Full Light Conditioner was all I could ever hope for in a conditioner! Conditioner can weigh my hair down and grease I up too much if over applied. So normally I use only a dot or two to cover the ends. But with the Redken I was able to use a normal amount and feel a light weight head of hair’ the bounce would come when dry. I’ve been really happy with the shampoo/conditioner combo!

3Amplifier/Bodifier Review:

My hair is adverse to a lot of product; it builds up and gets greasy! I found that if I overused the Body Full Volume Amplifier and the Body Full Instant Bodifer, it got kind of greasy pretty quick. If I used only 3 or 4 pumps of the Bodifier and about 5 squirts of the Amplifier, it seemed the perfect combination to a full lift and shine.

Overall Review:

I was very happy with the results of the Redken Body Full line. I tend to go to bed with my head wet and let it dry overnight. This usually results in no volume at all! So when I woke up after using the Redken products, I was blissful to see some bouncy bangs and lift at my roots. Even after 1 use, my mom noticed how full my hair looked and asked what I was using. I think I’m going to let her borrow it too. I was disappointed it wasn’t safe for color treated hair, but I’m still going to use it until it is gone.

Rating: amazon-stars-four-half4 ½ out of 5 stars!

Does your hair really matter? I believe it does.

Within the past year a big focus has come upon African-American women’s hair. Michelle Obama’s hair has especially garnered a lot of attention! This article, “Why Michelle Obama’s Hair Matters” on Yahoo! News caught my attention, opened my eyes and made me think. When Tyra Bank’s talk show premiered in September, she decided to reveal her “real hair” and declared September 8th National Real Hair Day. Even Chris Rock is in on this. His daughter asked him, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” which led him on a journey (which will be his new movie-Good Hair) to find the answer.

Now why would I really find this fascinating?

Because, as it said in the Yahoo! Article, “hair has classification power.” Think about it? I think this discussion has more to do than just with African-American women’s hair, though those thoughts, truths, and history are extremely intriguing to me. It has to do with every woman.

Hair is an important part of every girl’s life. It matters! Every woman’s hair, no matter the color of skin or hair, has a true significance in her life at some point or another. She could love it or hate but at that point it made a difference on how it looked and affected her.

Colors and textures are stereotyped. If you are blonde, you are dumb. Brunettes can be boring. Red heads have a temper. Curly hair means you are wild. And “braids, twists, afros, etc”[Yahoo] all come with their own stereotypes. “From long and straight to short and kinky – and, of course, good and bad – these terms become shorthand for desirability, worthiness and even worldview.” [Yahoo] Hair defines some women. Tyra was known for her different weaves as much as her modeling. Jennifer Aniston could not snip a strand without it being the next big thing. Would Megan Fox be as sexy without her long dark tresses? Macy Gray wouldn’t seem herself without her afro? Hair plays a bigger part of your life than you think?

Do you truly know your “real hair”? Without dyes, weaves, perms, any kind of heated tool, fake hair, or any kind of product in it, do you know what it looks and feels like?

The past year, I have been in a fight with my hair to figure out what exactly type it is, and what works best. And though I still haven’t quite figured it out, the main discovery is that my hair is wavy in parts and straight in others and likes to do what it wants. Just like a snowflake, no type of hair is the same. During my teen years, I damaged and dried my hair out with the help of a hair dryer and flat iron every day. This past summer I cut off all the damaged hair deciding that my hair and I would start anew. I have a feeling its going to be a long journey. I can’t quite bring myself to give up dying it, which I know has a big effect on the texture.

But all of this focus on “real” hair sure has made me think. I write this post to start a healthy discussion about hair and how it can affect you. Nothing more.

Do you know your “real hair”? Are you stereotyped for your hair? Do you care? Let me know!
