Happy Birthday and a New Skirt

I haven’t done an outfit post in a LONG time.  Why? Because it is way too hot to stand outside for more than 10 minutes.  I’m a weenie.   Anyway, Sunday was my Mom’s birthday and we went to see Shakespeare’s Hamlet.  We arrived a few minutes early so we got a few pictures in with my point/shoot so the quality isn’t great.

This is a skirt that I’ve had since Thanksgiving and haven’t worn.  I bought it because it was $4.99. I just took the tag off.  I haven’t worn it because it had baggy pockets on the side that just made everything look wide.  I finally got the brilliant idea to remove the pockets with a seam ripper.

I love it now! I kinda wanted to wear it like 4 days in a row.  The print is just small enough and I think it’ll be great in fall too!

Top: (worn backwards) Forever 21

Skirt: PacSun

Earrings: Forever 21

Bracelet: Vintage from Mom

Belt: Forever 21

Heels: Payless (years ago)

Boot: Husband’s from Cavenders (he just HAD to get his foot in there!)

I’m really gonna try to post a few more outfits…

What do you think? Do you actually wanna see them?

Apartment Therapy: New Additions and Final Touches

This past week a few new items made their way into our apartment.  Wait, what about No Buy July?  Don’t worry these were given to me by my parents!

First up, Metal Flower Wine Holder

Truthfully, this had a tall glass vase in the middle of it and was brown.  It didn’t go with Mom’s decor so I snapped at the chance to take it. (I had a light bulb moment with it!)  I knew I wanted it in the dining room, but didn’t need more flowers or candles.  So, I removed the glass and painted it black.  Voila! Wine holder! And one of the perfect final touches to our dining room! (I’ve got one more touch to finish and share!)

It now sits in the far corner of our dining room and was just the right thing to replace the platter, which is now on our mantle!

Next Up: Vintage Pair of Giraffes

Aren’t they gorgeous!?  Notice the detail in the ears, hoofs, tails, eyes, nose, everywhere!  These were a gift from my parents Christmas 2009.   Someone in my mom’s family had a pair like these when she was little, and she found these on ebay and gifted them to me! *touched*  I kind of have an affinity toward vintage animal pieces.  We have about 4 more around our apartment I’ll have to share one day! Back to the giraffes…

If you got these in 2009, why are they just now showing up at your house?

Christmas of 2009 was when we got engaged, promptly moved, got married, then smushed all our stuff together.  I asked my mom to keep the giraffes for me until then for safety/care reasons.  I was too afraid to break them till I was ready.  Every holiday I’ve stared at them waiting for just the right time. Which was now! I’ve added them to our mantle and they make quite the statement.  While they might not stay there, I’m loving the look right now! Specially with our little plaque there, which actually says “The …… Established 2010″.  It’s quite charming and one of my favorite wedding gifts we got.

Those are the newest additions to our decor.  I’ll add more as I make or find it!

Home Tour: Welcome to Our Dining Room!

I’ve been promising you a look into our ever evolving home for a while, and now I deliver!  Welcome to our dining room!  You’ve already seen a little bit of it from when I redid the table and chairs: here!  And here 4 months later is the final result of all that hard work!

I’m utterly in love with our dining room and everything in it! Probably because almost everything has been redone/remade by us.  I.E. us means me.

The only things in this room that remain “un-redone” are the wine racks (from Ikea) and the column (from Hobby Lobby)!  Through the double doors is our kitchen.

This is 1 of 2 storage units.  The other is by the window.  They were orginally in Mr. T’s duplex and bright white before we got married.  He found them on MAJAH sale at Target a few years ago and he insisted on buying them.  I wasn’t keen on it but now I couldn’t be more thrilled that we own them and he let me paint them.  I found the baskets at Big Lots for $3 a piece and was able to make the shelves into storage!

I found all these pictures online.  I got inspired by pictures from posters.com and searched vintage liquor ads.

I picked the ones that matched our color scheme, printed them out and found matching mats.  I wanted to add interest by staggering them up and down in thick black frames I found at Dollar General.

The chevron patterened interior fabric is from Hancocks and I sewed it along the pattern with red thread.  It was the absolute last piece to finish our dining room. It really tied it all together just the way I wanted.

My painted table and chairs!

The curtains were another redo.  They were short white tabbed curtains in Mr. T’s old duplex. I found some awesome ribbon and yellow fabric and made them into floor length curtains. I’ve had this LOVE sign in the front window of my last two apartments. It’s now a tradition!  Another random: the floral arrangement is in a tea pitcher! We got two as wedding presents and it made a cute vase!

That’s our dining room.  More of our apartment coming soon….

HAPPY WEEKEND!

Project Redo: Plain ‘n’ Simple Shelf No More

We all have one. Or maybe two.  In our house, we actually have 3.  I’m talking about bookshelves, people.  The not-real-wood, find at any super store, not-expensive shelf that has a gotta beyond flimsy card board backing.   We’ve cut holes in ours before to make room for cords, dvd players, etc.   I got bored with our plain black shelf.   So when I saw a picture in a magazine of a shelf with a fabric back, I knew I found my next project.  I’ve redone a shelf before, but this one was a little different. Of course, I can’t find the picture or magazine again but, I winged it along the way.

Here’s how it started out:

I had already taken the back off, which I then trashed.  Next, I took all my proper measurements and bought:

1/4″ thick plywood (they cut it to the correct size for me at Lowes)

3/4 of a yard of 54″ wide fabric.

Sand Paper

When I got home, I sanded down the rough edges and cut the fabric (with an inch to fold over) the size of the wood.  I then stapled the fabric to the wood with a 1/4″ staple gun.    Notice the discrepancy?  1/4″ thick wood…1/4″ thick staple.  Same sizes in this case didn’t quite work.  The staples stuck out just a little bit.  But it wasn’t completely noticeable to anyone but me, so  I left it.  (Except now you know..don’t tell!)

Covered Plywood! I chose these colors because they tie in with the living room and dining room colors without being obnoxiously matched!

Then, I nailed the covered plywood to the back of the shelf frame. There are at least 15 nails in this thing! I stood her up and put it back in the proper place in the hallway.

While there are quite a few imperfections, which I’m not going to point out, the over all look turned out fantastic!

It’s placed in the hallway to our bedroom. The door frame to the left is our guest room, then the corner then the door for the guest bathroom.  My gold mirror is hanging right above!

Slowly but surely, our apartment is loosing its “his/her” stuff feel. With each new project, like this one, it comes together a little bit more.

More about our apartment coming soon! I’ve finally taken pictures of a room in our house to show you!

Minds can be changed to the MAXI!

I’ve had a love/hate/hate relationship with maxi dresses for the past two years! But that was two years ago and the things won’t go away and my opinion has changed over time.  They look really good on other people, but for myself not so much…..

…..until now.  I’ve tried on a few variations, colors, etc and hated them.  Then I found fabric at my local Hancocks (fabric store).  It was already the perfect length, already had a smocked top, and was in a pattern I adore.

I pinned and started to sew my first dress ever!  Might be the easiest sewing ever!

Say hello to my creation! And my new hat! (it only took about 25 try ons to find the right one!)

Dress: Sewn

Sandals: Target

Hat: PacSun

Bracelets: Mix of Vintage and Gifted

Necklaces: Pacsun

I also bought another piece of shorter fabric for a short dress…coming soon!

P.S.  The right maxi dress can work!
