Tight Vintage (No Heat!) Curls How To!

Trolling around on pinterest, I’m finding lots of hair styles I’m loving trying.  That’s how I got this next Hair How To!  It is vintage style curls with NO HEAT!!

Yep, you read that right. NO HEAT!!  And it was easy!

I watched this video:

I got up this morning, washed and dried my hair, then got started.   I did just what she said.  Since my hair is pretty thin, I misted hair spray all over before I began.  I parted my hair then placed an elastic headband over my forehead and hair.  Then, I began wrapping small sections around the head band.  After I wrapped the final piece of hair, I bobby pinned a few loose sections to achieve a more day appropriate look.

BEFORE

I wore my hair like this for about 8 hours.  It was a very hippie/boho look.  I actually want to wear it again with a really romantic/lace outfit.  After dinner, I took it all out.

Then I brushed out the curls around my hand, like she did in the video.  It really does define the curl!   It actually worked.  This no heat style turned out as pretty as when I curl my hair with my wand!

AFTER

I’m still shocked at how well this turned out!  I loved the results and the fact there was NO heat.  Its a total plus during this hot summer!  It’ll be happening alot more, I promise!

New Summer Hairstyles: Up and Out of the Way

Summer is here, in full force! As the temperature rises , so does my frustration with my hair.  I’m growing my hair out and having it down, around my neck, is driving me nuts.    In response, I’ve found some pretty, some romantic, and some easy hairstyles that are perfect for summer.  I.E. away from your neck and face.

The French Braid

First off is the French Braid.  Since I just learned how to French braid from this video, I’ve been kind of obsessed!  It’s a simple style that you can tailor to your own style.  You can make it as tight or loose as you want.

Simply French

For an interesting take on the regular French Braid, tuck the end of the braid up under your hair and secure with bobby pins.

My hair was dry and straight.  It might work a little easier with some texture spray to keep away flyaways.  The hardest part was the braid itself. Roll up the ends and the band of your braid underneath and pin.

Cascade of a Braid

For another style with a French braid, braid it across the back of your head. No, not your forehead; the back of your head.   It’s called the waterfall braid. Here’s the tutorial from Love, Maegan!

And here’s a more descriptive tutorial from Cute Girls Hairstyles (it was a tad easier for me). I think this look is fantastic for long hair…which I’m working on growing.  But layers might make it more difficult.  It isn’t for the faint of heart.   It’s difficult but worth trying. This was my third try and I just braided it straight into a low side pony.

Non Boring Ponytails

Ponytails never go out of style. But they can get repetitive and boring.  Here’s a few with some interest!

A Messy Pony

This messy pony is perfect for almost any length hair.  If you have shorter hair, skip pulling it into a pony. With a simple broken down picture tutorial AND written instructions, it is easy to accomplish.

This took no time at all.  The hardest part was the backcombing.  To make it easier, spray with a light mist of hairspray first.  I also have more bobby pins than I wanted, but my layers kept popping out so they had to be pinned.   This is an easy, off the face, style that still has lots of volume.

A Knotty Pony

This style from The Beauty Department is a knotted version of a side pony.  It also included a simple broken down picture tutorial along with written instructions!

I might never wear a regular side pony tail again! This is another longer hair style;  I felt my hair was almost too short.  My “left over” tail wasn’t very long so I tucked it underneath with a bobby pin.  BONUS:  Hubs said he really liked this style the best!

Beachy Wavy Hair

Wavy Hair for summer is easy and pretty for summer.  Its not exactly up and out of your face but when pulled into a pony, it still looks fantastic!

If you want to use a curling iron to achieve this look, this one includes pictures!  To avoid heat,  apply Garnier Fructise Style “Wonder Waves” Wave Defining Mousse to wet hair and start scrunching hair.  When hair is about 1/2 way air dried, spritz Fekkai Marine Summer Hair Beach Waves throughout hair and keep scrunching.  Let hair completely dry and style into desired hairstyle. Here’s the result on my hair:

All of these styles are going to be summer go-to’s for my hair. What are your favorite hair do’s this summer?

No stick, just stay!

Every May when I as little, I donned a head full of curlers and a face full of mom’s makeup for my dance recital.  I’d complain about the hot curlers and the brushing and most of all the hairspray.  I swear it felt like mom used 1/2 a can!  Helmet head was an understatement.  Mom had some strong hairspray, which is the kind of strength her hair needed.

I think in reaction to that, I refused to use any hairspray, when I started fixing my own hair.  This lasted for about 4 years until about sophomore year in college. While getting ready at EC’s apartment for night’s out, she always topped off her hair with a quick hit of hairspray and I would borrow it, hesitantly of course.

Eventually, I bought my own can and I’ve never looked back!

Its got just the right amount of hold, but doesn’t weigh my hair down in the least!  No matter how much I use I never have helmet head.  I can run my fingers through my curls and they bounce right back! The scent isn’t overly chemical.  I’ve used other brands at random moments, and hate the results.  I’m a Tres Two only girl!   And for about $4 a can, I keep one in each bathroom.  Its also one of the few brands that is always in travel size!

This is the perfect hairspray for the girl who hates hairspray!

*blog disclosure* This post is in no way sponsored! I’ve bought all the cans that I’ve used.

Do you really need the clip on your curling iron?

For almost a year, I’ve been using a clipless curling iron. A what?!!?! Well lets back up..I know you’ve read lots of women’s mags or beauty blogs that have recommended wrapping your hair around the curling iron. Well someone finally came up with the idea of removing the clip.  And I saved my $$ and got a clipless curling iron last july!

You can get them in various sizes from a simple rod or a cone shape one.  (they also come in reverse cone shape..this is the one I have)

Enzo Milano Reverse Conico Curling Iron

The manufactures website says the features are:

Features

  • Heats up to 160 C / 320 F
  • Ceramic Heating
  • Ergonomic Design
  • Coated Aluminum Teflon Barrel

And I’ll admit, it is a great curling iron.  I’m converted!  Its hard to use a regular curling iron now!  The width of the barrel allows for soft curls or tight ringlets depending on how tight I roll it or how long I hold it on.  And for me the best feature, it takes me about 15 min to curl my whole head in pretty waves that last all day!  It sounds stupid but I feel like the curls that come off this iron hold longer than from my other irons.

The problem with this iron is it is HOT!  It came with a “heat resistant glove” which was not.  It was one cheap knit glove that offered no protection.   It took me quite a while to get the hang of the iron without touching it.  I never got any real burns but there have been a couple close calls.  **If I drop my curling iron (any one) or straightener, I let it fall and jump away.  I feel like this avoids hand/foot/leg burns.  Though where I do my hair is carpeted, so this might not work for you**

My iron had allowed styles like these:

See how diverse?!  Ulta has lots of options for clipless irons at all price ranges!

What kind of curling iron do you use?

How To: Headband Holder

Remember when I asked if anyone had a good idea for a headband holder? Well I didn’t get any feedback, looked up a few things, got really fed up with my overflowing shoebox, and decided to make my own.  Here’s how I made it!

I searched for a good 2 different evenings finding the exact headband holder that I could make easily with NO SEWING!  And I did! (Thank you to a girl and a glue gun!….I used her tutorial, but tweaked it a little bit)

Supplies:

Large D Ring

1″ Wide Ribbon

(if you want another layer, 2″ Wide Ribbon)

Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

Scissors

Cut your ribbon as long as you think you need it.  I cut my ribbon REALLY long, like 2 1/2 yards.  I cut the 2″ ribbon long too and trimmed it later.   I have ALOT of headbands.

Start by pinching about 3 inches of your 1″ ribbon. Flip this over and glue it together.

After that is cool, glue under the pinched part and lay it down flat.  This creates your hook for the headbands.

Space about 4 to 4 1/2 inches between each pinched loop. This is so your headbands can hang evenly. No exact measurements were exactly taken; judge it.

Make enough loops till you run out of ribbon.

This is were I made a tweak.  Glue your looped ribbon to the 2″ section.  I glued the looped ribbon at the top then at each loop and the very bottom.

I left enough 2″ ribbon on the top to glue the D ring to it.

I pulled the two ribbons over and glued the D ring in between and then glued the end together. That’s all it took!  Finished!

Close up of finished project.

Finally…in use, out of the shoe box, and off the floor.

I picked this blue/black ribbon combo because it matches the color scheme of our bedroom.  If you have a problem organizing your headbands. This is the perfect solution, easy to make, and takes about 30 min…less if you have more of a plan!

UPDATE: If you do make a headband holder, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see it. Please link it back to this post! or email/twitter/facebook me with the link!!
