Wear Neon Without Looking Like an 80′s Movie Extra

When you think of NEON, what comes to mind? The 80′s of course! Big hair and neon everywhere!

Well, neon colors are back this summer with a vengeance! Big name brands like Burberry Prorsum, Jil Sander, and Max Mara all included neon on their runways for S/S ’11!  Wearing this trend isn’t easy though.  Do you really wanna look like an extra from Valley Girl?

That answer is NO. Here are a few tips to wear the Neon trend and not look like you stepped out of an 80′s music video!

  • DO use NEON in your cosmetics! If you’re not ready to wear neon colored clothing, incorporate the trend in your lipstick or nail color.  Try a bright hued lipstick.  Stila Cosmetics has some great long lasting lip color in shades like Exhilarating (a hot pink) and Outrageous (a neon coral).

  • DO wear only one neon item at a time! Wearing a neon skirt, neon shoes, neon accessories, AND neon lipstick is overkill.  This kind of combo equals 80′s.  Wear only one of these items to prevent a electric clown look!
  • DO incorporate neon with accessories! From a ring to earrings to a bracelet, a little neon goes a long way. Try a bright belt, bag or pair of shoes for a fun touch with out much commitment!

Splurge vs. Save: The Little White Dress

Easter is in a month, Spring is here, and gosh darn it, I’m ready for WHITE! So enter this edition of

:::Splurge vs. Save:::

The Little White Dress

You’ve heard of the LBD, well for spring/summer you need the Little White Dress.  Throw it on for anything, dress it up or down. Its always a summer must have.

The Detailed Dress

The Nanette Lepore dress has some amazing details! The square neck, the cutout lace are beautiful, but that price tag sure isn’t.  The F21 dress is $20. My wallet likes it better.  Thus, it wins.

The Crochet Dress

The Suzi Chin dress is lovely, but layers/tiers on the F21 add so much more interest.  And the scalloped hem sets off the dress. F21 wins this round.

The Lace Shift Dress

So…the only difference I can really tell is the neckline.  The quality on the McGinn dress is probably much higher but the $23 price tag means you could afford shoes too.

You might be able to tell, Forever 21 always wins.  Yes it does.  The prices cant be beat and with the right care your F21 dresses can last at least a few years.  They have qutie a few white dresses to choose from, so take your pick.

And this didn’t fit in with the rest of the dresses, but this is the Little White Dress that I want.  I’d take off the tie waist and a colorful belt or big pretty necklace.

How To: Headband Holder

Remember when I asked if anyone had a good idea for a headband holder? Well I didn’t get any feedback, looked up a few things, got really fed up with my overflowing shoebox, and decided to make my own.  Here’s how I made it!

I searched for a good 2 different evenings finding the exact headband holder that I could make easily with NO SEWING!  And I did! (Thank you to a girl and a glue gun!….I used her tutorial, but tweaked it a little bit)

Supplies:

Large D Ring

1″ Wide Ribbon

(if you want another layer, 2″ Wide Ribbon)

Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

Scissors

Cut your ribbon as long as you think you need it.  I cut my ribbon REALLY long, like 2 1/2 yards.  I cut the 2″ ribbon long too and trimmed it later.   I have ALOT of headbands.

Start by pinching about 3 inches of your 1″ ribbon. Flip this over and glue it together.

After that is cool, glue under the pinched part and lay it down flat.  This creates your hook for the headbands.

Space about 4 to 4 1/2 inches between each pinched loop. This is so your headbands can hang evenly. No exact measurements were exactly taken; judge it.

Make enough loops till you run out of ribbon.

This is were I made a tweak.  Glue your looped ribbon to the 2″ section.  I glued the looped ribbon at the top then at each loop and the very bottom.

I left enough 2″ ribbon on the top to glue the D ring to it.

I pulled the two ribbons over and glued the D ring in between and then glued the end together. That’s all it took!  Finished!

Close up of finished project.

Finally…in use, out of the shoe box, and off the floor.

I picked this blue/black ribbon combo because it matches the color scheme of our bedroom.  If you have a problem organizing your headbands. This is the perfect solution, easy to make, and takes about 30 min…less if you have more of a plan!

UPDATE: If you do make a headband holder, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see it. Please link it back to this post! or email/twitter/facebook me with the link!!

I have no good name for this post.

This post is late late late. But its here and I have no good name for it.  My creative juices are tapped out.  With a stuffy nose and a cough to go with it, bed and nyquil are calling my name.

Truth be told, I loved this outfit.  It still amazes how simple items put together can make a statement.  Notice again, we are indoors.  Too cold outside and it got too late by the time we took these. Which was another mistake.  I haven’t felt the greatest the last few days so by the time I get home I want to relax and do nothing.  By the time these pictures got to the computer, I was beyond frustrated that out of 58 pictures taken (hubs believes in taking extras.) I got 5 decent ones, and here they are:

Jacket: Light Denim Jacket from Old Navy
Shirt: White Pocket Tee from Target
Jeans: JBrand Black Legging
Boots: OTK Fold Over Black Boots by Chinese Laundry

Jewelry:
Earrings: Black Stone Studs
Necklace: Multi Bead Silver/Black Necklace
Bracelet: Dotted Silver Bangle from H&M

I don’t even know that this face is supposed to be. Perhaps the beginning of my disgust? All I do know is I hate taking indoor pictures.

Also you might notice, that I’m a day or so behind. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles I was trying to keep up with the month of February, but days off and not feeling good=sweat pants and tees.  30×30 doesn’t have a set of official rules, so by gum, you’ll see 30 outfits.  Don’t you worry your pretty little head.

So ends day 8…

Superbowl Style

I had every intention to wear my yellow dress with boots last night for the super bowl.  Then I had what could have been considered a 30×30 catastrophe.  I put on my yellow dress and my boots and realized that the dress was too long.  I.E.  I wouldn’t wear it all month long.   Its too long with boots and there aren’t any other shoes I would wear it with. Because I’m a dress/boots snob. Thus I’m considering swapping this out for another item.  It won’t get worn.  Instead this left me with about 5 minutes to throw something on. So, I did.

I threw on some old faithfuls and some fun jewelry.  And ended up with an outfit that I’d been happier with than almost any of the other ones in the 30×30 so far.  Course being outside might have helped too!

Shirt: White Pocket Tee from Target

Jeans: JBrand Denim Leggings

Boots: Steve Madden Cadence Boots (Kendi has these too!)

Jewelry:

Earrings: Gold Thin Hoops from Target

Bracelet: Vintage Gold Wrap Bracelet

Necklace: Rhinestone Eyed Owl Necklace from vendor at Canton First Monday Trade Days

Let me just say, this is the first time I’ve worn this necklace and I’ve had it for about 2 years. Now that I have, I don’t know why I haven’t worn it sooner.  Its such an awesome necklace. I liked and got it for 20 bucks. I didn’t know anything about it, just guessed it was old.  Until….the other day I was nosing around on Indiana’s website Adored Austin and found it!!  Apparently, its vintage from the ’70s!  Which makes me love it more.  I also want her fish necklace.  I’ll have to hunt for it next time at Canton!

That’s Indiana‘s close up of it (I cropped it, hope that’s ok Indiana)!

So ends outfit 6/day 5.
